We live in an age of habitual line-steppers and one-uppers. Bigger, better, more, crazier, more creative, so on and so forth. Despite what my tone may suggest, most of the time the result is pretty freaking awesome. Recent history gives us a few cases in point: The renewed battle to build the world’s tallest skyscraper between the US, China, Dubai; The space race between the US and the Soviets; and the pissing contest between Paul Allen, Larry Ellison and other billionaires to build the world’s coolest/largest yacht. The topic of this post is no different – some habitual line steppers have really outdone themselves here. So without further ado, we give to you the five most over-the-top diamond encrusted items in the world (as if diamond encrusted anything wasn’t over the top already…)
1.Diamond Encrusted iPhone 5: “Joe,” as he prefers to be called, is a businessman from Hong Kong that wanted to use a giant 26-carat Black diamond that has been in his family for generations as the center point for his customized iPhone 5. That massive black diamond was used for the home button of the smartphone. That large black diamond isn’t the only gemstones used on this custom smartphone. He also added 600 white diamonds around the outside edge of the smartphone along with what appears to be gold. The customized iPhone 5 reportedly cost $15 million.
2. Victoria’s Secret Diamond Encrusted Bra: Not much to say here… just admire the 3,000 brilliant cut white diamonds (60 carats in total), light blue sapphires, and oval-shaped topazes (another 82 carats), which are all set in 18 karat white gold, that comprise the $2 million bra adorning Adriana Lima. Move on at your own pace.
3. Shiloh Jolie-Pitt’s Pacifier: Maybe its just me, but this $17,000 white gold and 279 diamond pacifier just seems poorly thought-out and dangerous. Its probably too heavy for a baby to keep it its mouth, and what baby will latch on to the taste of metal? Also, the damage that diamonds would do to everything the baby threw it it, including its mother. So it should come as no surprise that the parents who purchased this are none other than Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for their child, Shiloh. Pretty much speaks for itself, right?
4. “For the Love of God”: This is probably the world’s most expensive piece of art, and over the top in so many ways. It consists of a platinum cast of an 18th century human skull encrusted with 8,601 flawless diamonds, including a pear-shaped pink diamond located in the forehead that is known as the Skull Star Diamond.. The piece was recently purchased for $100 million dollars by a consortium of art collectors, a.k.a. idiots, which included the piece’s creator, Damien Hirst.
5. Mercedes Benz SL 600: Last but certainly not least, we have this… well there are no words to accurately describe the opulence of this car. in 2008, Saudi Prince Al-Waleed paid $48 million to have his car covered in diamond Swarovski crystals. Prince Al-Waleed is one of the richest men in the world at over $20 billion, so this was just a drop in the bucket to him. He charges admirers $1,000 just to touch his magnificent motor coach! I can only wonder what driving that thing is like with the desert sun beaming down on it. I would take that over the skull any day, and it is an incredible bargain at only half the price!
